How gender plays a role in workplace discrimination

by | Mar 4, 2019 | Firm News |

Every person has the right to a workplace that is free from harassing behaviors, mistreatment and discrimination. Unfortunately, some employers and co-workers do not always acknowledge these rights. If you are experiencing mistreatment, unfair treatment, harassing words and actions, or other types of unacceptable behavior, you could be a victim of gender discrimination.

Gender discrimination is one of the most common types of mistreatment that Oregon workers experience in the workplace. Often, women are victims of various types of unacceptable treatment from male co-workers and employers. As a victim, you have the right to speak up and speak out about what you are experiencing and fight to hold the liable parties accountable.

Examples of gender discrimination

Gender discrimination takes many different forms, and you may not be certain that what you experienced is actually discriminatory; you may think you are simply the target of inappropriate jokes or work in a generally negative environment. Women have the same skills and capabilities as men, yet the workplace can be difficult. Examples of gender-based discrimination include the following:

  • Receiving unequal pay for doing the same job
  • Missing hard-earned and deserved promotions
  • Being unreasonably terminated
  • Not being hired for a job for which you are qualified
  • Verbal and physical sexual harassment

Both federal and state laws protect the interests of female employees in various types of workplace environments. If you believe that your male counterparts are receiving preferential treatment or you are missing out on various opportunities should you have access to, there are options available to you.

Employees who experience mistreatment in the workplace do not have to sit by silently. Victims can take legal action to hold employers responsible for their actions as well as for allowing employees to create and maintain a hostile or unfair work environment for female employees.

You do not have to fight back alone

You do not have to fight for your interests without experienced support and guidance. Gender discrimination cases are complex, and you will find significant benefit in seeking the counsel of an attorney experienced in discrimination law and employees’ rights cases.

If you are not certain where to begin or simply want to know more about what types of behavior count as discrimination, it can be helpful to start with a complete evaluation of your case. An explanation of your options can help you understand how to move forward.
